The Man of God: How to Live a Godly Life

A godly man is not born, but made through his relationship with God, a pursuit of holiness, and obedience to the Word. Becoming a man of God requires intentionality, discipline, humility, and a heart open to correction. Throughout scripture, we find men like David, Paul, and Joshua who sought after God with a desire to live pleasing in His sight. Their lives offer valuable lessons on how to grow into the role of a godly man.

Steps to Becoming a Godly Man

1. Pursue a Personal Relationship with God

The foundation of a godly man’s life is his relationship with God. This means actively seeking God’s presence daily, praying, studying the Bible, and desiring to live according to His will. Jesus emphasized the importance of seeking God first:

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33 KJV).

The pursuit of God begins by acknowledging our dependence on Him, much like David, who, though a king, constantly sought after God with humility, saying, "Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am" (Psalm 39:4 KJV).

2. Respond to God's Correction

David’s life was marked not by his perfection, but by his willingness to respond to God’s correction. Even after committing sins, including adultery and murder, David’s heart was sensitive to God’s rebuke. When confronted by the prophet Nathan, David quickly repented, saying, “I have sinned against the LORD” (2 Samuel 12:13 KJV). It was this humility and responsiveness to God’s correction that made him “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22 KJV).

For men today, this principle is crucial. Being open to correction, whether it comes through prayer, scripture, or the counsel of godly mentors, is a mark of true spiritual maturity.

3. Live with Discipline and Vision

A godly man is called to live a life of discipline and purpose. Paul writes, “But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7 KJV). Discipline requires setting boundaries, developing a routine of prayer and Bible study, and actively rejecting the distractions of the world.

Living with vision also means that a man of God should have a sense of purpose, both spiritually and practically. Whether leading his family or serving in the community, his decisions are guided by a godly vision. This echoes the words of Proverbs 29:18 (KJV): "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."

4. Lead in Family and Community

The role of a godly man extends to the family and community. As the head of the household, a man is called to lead his family in the fear of the Lord. Ephesians 5:23-25 (KJV) establishes the man as the spiritual leader in the home: “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”

In leadership, there is a call to service. Jesus Himself said, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister” (Mark 10:45 KJV). Leading a family or community means serving them with love, care, and sacrifice. Additionally, a godly man should ensure his children know the Lord, teaching them diligently as described in Deuteronomy 6:7 (KJV): “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children."

5. Stay Humble and Avoid Hypocrisy

Humility is a key characteristic of a man of God. A man who is humble knows his dependence on God and does not boast in his achievements or knowledge. Proverbs 11:2 (KJV) warns, “When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.”

Additionally, there is a strong warning against hypocrisy. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their hypocrisy, saying, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" (Matthew 23:13 KJV). If a man tells his family to follow God’s commands but does not live by them himself, his hypocrisy will deeply impact his children. Consistency in living out the Word is crucial for a man who leads his family spiritually.

6. Serve and Invest in Others

A man of God understands the importance of serving in the church and in his community. Colossians 3:16 (KJV) emphasizes the role of teaching and serving within the body of Christ: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another.” Service within the church strengthens faith and establishes a godly example for others to follow.

7. Trust in God’s Plan

Lastly, becoming a godly man means trusting in God’s plan for your life, even when it is difficult. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Like David, men of God must trust that even in their failures or challenges, God is working all things for good.

Conclusion

Being a godly man is not about perfection, but about pursuit. Men like David showed that even in failure, a heart open to God’s correction is what pleases the Lord. A godly man is disciplined, leads his family, serves his community, and most importantly, seeks after God with all his heart. By following these principles, men can live a life pleasing to the Lord and be strong examples of faith in their families and communities.
